Google announced new Google Chrome OS initiative for netbook computers -- the era of simple, lightweight, easy to use, always-on computer would soon begin!

On July 7, 2009 Google announced that they are going to release a new operating system for netbook computers. The operating system is named Google Chrome OS and is expected to be open-sourced-released later by the end of this year. By mid 2010 it is expected to be available in the hand of consumers.

While initially the Linux-based desktop OS will power netbook computers, soon it will be extended to cover traditional computer as well. You might ask what the motivation of all this? As Google said in their press release:

Computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.

Google Chrome OS is Google attempt to re-think what operating systems should be!

ps: My perspective and humble 'prediction': this would become a 'webbier' operating system, lightweight, instant-on, virus free, fully browser ready (the front-end of the OS itself might be a browser!). Desktop and the web in this OS context would be seamlessly integrated -- hence everything 'd be stored on the web (wordprocessor, spreadsheet app, file, folder, document etc) -- so there's no need to update application software, search would become easy, filtering and massive processing power is stored on the web -- on the [google] web server ... and most important of all (for google) : it might become a foundation and entry point where Google can bring people to experience (and get hooked) to google apps (a.ka. gmail) and google docs suite as a whole. :-) ... my two cents. :-)
