Exciting UI & UX Design Ideas From Palm!

Here's another look at the Palm Pre. This time its excellent UI & UX design approach.

It is very very interesting to me that the Palm designers choose to design their screen layout to be be scrollable sideways -- left and right.

With this approach: at any time Palm user can see 'section' of the screen where their application 'card' resides. Yet if they want to see the 'remaining side of the screen' -- or the other 'application cards' that they have, they just simply need to flip the screen to the right or left, with quick simple scrolling gesture of their hand. The screen scrolls to the destination we intend to. It gives us a sense that the screen becomes 'flexibly wide' and seems almost 'have no boundary'.

Such approach and idea is a great breakthrough, and truly awesome too. It turns a tiny screen and its limited dimension to be come a huge flexible scrollable space that people can navigate around. Combined with the 'application card' approach, people no longer have to just take a look at application icons, instead they can interface and interact with the 'widgets' directly, on their tiny screen!

Such approach very similar with how we experience interactive games in the past. In interactive games, never we are limited by the screen boundary; instead the physical screen just become a 'frame' where we can navigate through a virtual space, freely, without boundary.

In a way, this approach also might be a great example of how a 'compiz' approach towards making virtual screen space wider and more spacious than its physical layout provide being adapted for limited sized mobile device.

It is truly awesome that Palm come up with such a great idea. I am so sure this 'application card' approach would become a great popular trend (or approach) for designing mobile user interface and user experience, today and in the very near future.

Plurk User Interface Is Fun, But It's Real Usefulness & Function Is Too Easily Forgotten ... Why Ya?

Plurk_User_Interface_Is_Fun_Bu.zip (61 KB)

Plurk is still a 'mystery' to me. While I do work, think and interact on the internet daily; seems plurk never been in my 'activity' picture anyday. It's purpose and cute function seems just easily (and too quickly) being forgotten.

Perhaps I shall try to integrate Plurk to Posterous, and see how the 'cute historical activity timeline map' that Plurk provide could/would become useful, or powerful?

Perhaps Plurk shall integrate with other sites that people update daily?

Suggestions welcomed.

Amazon Remembers -- Pretty Awesome!

It was told that Amazon had a new innovative service in their arsenal. It looks like this:

Looking at that, my prediction:

  1. Initially Amazon remembers what you like ...
  2. Later on perhaps Amazon (immediately) provides what you like ...
  3. Then Amazon deliver it "just in time".

Pretty awesome!

Suggestion To Improve Posterous' Auto-Post Feature

Autopost is a great feature that Posterous provide. It would allow Posterous' owner to auto-post their new Posterous content to twitter and to other blog/social site that he/she own.

Yet, with the introduction of Posterous' new capability for 1 person to have more than 1 posterous sites under his/her control, and ability to have those site having multiple contributor to it, some enhancement to the auto-post feature might be required.

The picture above try to describe the idea. Essentially: it would be wonderful if Posterous could allow people to specify which posterous site (that he/she own) shall be linked with the auto-post capability, and which posterous site shall not.

This way: if a person own more than 1 posterous site under his/her control, then -- through this new "enhanced auto-post" feature -- he/she can specify which Posterous site shall automatically post to his/her tweets/social/blogs, and which Posterous site shall not.

This would make his/her tweets/social/blogs become as personal, as private, and as powerful as before. Posts that come from his/her peer and group will not appear as his/her private tweets, and more. :-)

But of course if the Posterous owner wants all his/her Posterous sites to automatically auto-post to his/her twitter, blog, social sites that he/she had, he/she shall be allowed to do such.

The Beetle vs The Beatles! :-)

The Beetle

vs The Beatles! :-)

Awesome to see (and re-experience) the creativity of how 'the ad designer' could imaginatively relate 'great events of the past' with 'exciting initiative and dids of today'.

Happy Holiday everyone! :-)

Something To Think About ...

Tonight my facebook account was not accessible for around 10-15 minutes or so, from the first time I tried to log-on and failed to sign-in.

I wonder whether at that time the Facebook team were upgrading their identity / directory server, and whether such downtime is being done for the entire user at the same time, or to one group of servers at a time.

In designing an 'always ON' horizontal architecture system, this is probably an important (and 'interesting') aspect to think about. :-)

Advertising Without (Bombastic) Talk Attached

In doing 'great advertising without (bombastic) talk attached', VW, Nike, Apple and Louis Vuitton is definitely the master of the art and craft! Their advertising copy is consistently clear, direct, simple, factual, fact based, and no bombastic claim attached. These are 'things' that make their message so effective, their posture so iconic, and their brand so much loved.

Dinosaur, Dinosaur, The Amazing Dinosaurs!

While waiting for a meeting, I discover these pictures of dinosaurs on the net.
It amazed me to suddenly feel how -- perhaps several years ago -- these ancient dinosaurs might have (instictively and
'accidentally') inspire us all to build and design some of the 'tallest, highest structure on earth' that we have today, and tomorrow.
Our sense of possible balance of weight and height might have come from that.
